The Highland Park Ice Edition most certainly gave us some respite from the Singaporean heat. Brand owners Edrington launched this limited edition bottling, as well as the Highland Park Inner Circle Club, at the Le Olde Cuban Whisky Bar in April 2016.
The Inner Circle is a community of Highland Park fans and connoisseurs. It is managed by Edrington Singapore, and it gives members access to exclusive events and launches as well as first dibs on limited edition bottlings like the Highland Park Ice Edition.
The Highland Park Ice Edition builds on the Valhalla Collection, which comprised of Thor, Loki, Freya and Odin. It comes in a rather fancy bottle, probably inspired by its namesake. This is a 17-year-old expression, but apart from the age statement, not much information on this expression is available.
Cask & Drams weren’t at the launch, so we didn’t have the chance to sample the whisky. However, critics loved it.
According to the press release, the Highland Park Ice won the “Ultimate Spirits Challenge’s (USC) highest award of excellence in the single malt Scotch category, achieving an amazing score of 99 out of 100 to earn the accolade of Chairman’s Trophy. This award is only granted for the highest rated products considered to be the best by their competitive performance among their peers in each product category.”
Whiskyfun.com scored it a credible 88 out of a 100 for its round and sweet notes.
The official tasting notes read:
At 53.9% ABV, the Ice Edition has a naturally vivid and radiant colour, with a glacial, mirror-like brightness. An intense burst of fruity aromas reminiscent of cool, fresh pineapples and ripe mango sorbet titillate your senses as one first noses the single malt whisky. Silvery shards of smoke give way to the frosty kick of root ginger to end the note. The powerful and mellifluous palate, like the Ice Giants themselves, combines a misty peat smoke intertwined with pearlescent vanilla seeds and overtones of molten orris root. To top it off, the beautifully balanced, creamy and oily finish snowballs into long lingering woodiness and dry, feverish spices, making the Ice Edition a scintillating and perfectly harmonious whisky to savour.”
The Highland Park Ice Edition is limited to 30,000 worldwide, which seems like a lot. But, only 20 are allocated to Singapore. So you’ll have to move as fast as the rate of melting ice in mid-day Singapore in order to get a bottle.
